In November 2017 I graduated with a Bachelors of Business Studies (Honours) from Waterford Institute of Technology, having transferred from Dublin Institute of Technology’s Business & Management (DT365) course in September 2016. I chose to follow the marketing stream of my course as this area greatly appealed to me, influencing me to complete my minor dissertation on the topic of Experiential Marketing. My findings showed that companies can achieve not only immediate short term sales, but also long term customer commitment and satisfaction through the implementation of events and experiences as appose to relying solely on traditional marketing techniques, such as print and television advertising.

I’m a Senior Product Engineer in Wayflyer; a VC backed startup where we’re building a next-gen digital product portfolio to help fuel leading eCommerce businesses. 🚀

Day to day, I write Python on a Django backend, TypeScript and React on the frontend and deploy our systems using AWS and CDK. I love the problems we’re solving and how the solutions are helping our customers make money! Previously I was a Senior Fullstack Tech Lead and DevOps Consultant for NearForm. I grew from a software engineering intern to a graduate software engineer and then into a senior engineer, tech lead and consultant. While here, I used world-class full-stack MicroServices and DevSecOps technologies. I hold a 1st class honours degree in Applied Computing, which is where I got my start.

I have helped to deliver and lead the delivery of distributed software systems and applications for all forms of companies, from VC backed firms to large scale enterprises undergoing digital transformations – All of this while being remote!

I’m not interested in adding a commute to my workday and I believe remote work is truly the path forward for a lot of tech roles. I have been a part of making that reality on the projects I have worked on.

I’m pretty passionate about Open Source and love to give back to the software community when I can. I previously contributed to the Node.js C/C++ core and became a core maintainer for some time, helped to develop the OpenJS foundation accredited Node.js certifications and have used GoLang to develop Open Source systems and libraries. During my time with NearForm, I became highly proficient with many aspects of a modern delivery pipeline. I specialise using full-stack JavaScript with React on the frontend and anything performant Node.js on the Backend. I worked with both NoSQL and SQL database solutions. I even developed custom DevOps solutions using Docker and Kubernetes and acted as a tech lead delivering React frontends.

As part of my qualification, I studied programming with several different languages, spending most of my time with Java, C/C++ and Javascript, but used Swift, Ruby and Prolog on college projects. I also studied several programming, mathematics, software engineering, web development and game development courses.

I try to stay technology agnostic and choose the best tool for the job and be result-driven, which gives me ambition and enthusiasm with all tech, once it’s solving a problem and the solution scales!
